Frozen Watermelon Lemonade: The Official Drink of the Summer

Sharing is caring!

It’s hot. If you’re like me, you want a frozen drink in each hand and a pool to float in for the next 5 months (here in Nashville, it’s hot until mid-October). The best I’ve made is this icy blend of sweet and sour frozen watermelon lemonade. Two ingredients and a blender are all that stand between you and true refreshment this summer.

Summer isn’t quite here yet, but it sure feels like it here in Nashville. We’re quickly hitting the mid-80’s every morning, and the humidity is setting in. I’ve already had my feet and ankles eaten by no-see-ums, so we broke out the bug spray. Little Cub had 5 bites of her own, so I’ve been extra careful to keep her sprayed down before letting her run free.

We are so lucky that my husband has built us an Eden in the backyard to hang out and play. I hope you’re following me on Instagram to see all the wonderful flowers, fruits, and vegetables that he’s growing. It’s always been my hope to expand this blog to cover growing your own food. That’s why it’s called Elle Jay at Home, not just Elle Jay in the Kitchen. Haha!

It Is Definitely Time for Frozen Watermelon Lemonade

So, anyway, there’s been a bag of frozen watermelon in our deep freezer since June 2018. I was pregnant and bought the world’s biggest watermelon because that was ALL I wanted to eat. Of course, I didn’t want it to go bad before I could eat it all, so I cubed it and froze it.

Pregnant-me thought I’d blend it up with tequila and have margaritas one day. Then, we just never bought tequila. I don’t know about you other parents, but liquor hasn’t made it on the shopping list since we had a baby.

Anyways, yesterday, it was too hot to go outside until we got some much-appreciated cloud cover. I thought, “Hey, now is a great time to get out that watermelon! I bet the Cub would love a slushie!”

We’ve been going through a pitcher of mint tea every two days, and it has been a super refreshing and healthy way to beat the heat. We really needed something a little more special, though. And that is why we broke out the blender!

2 Ingredients to Frozen Watermelon Lemonade

Here’s the part you’re going to love: it’s 2 ingredients in a blender. This is the easiest recipe I’ll ever post, and it’s honestly just so good you won’t miss the tequila (but feel free to add it, anyway). All you need is frozen watermelon and lemonade.

Prepping the Watermelon

To freeze the watermelon, you want to first cut it up (without the rind) into cubes. Once your watermelon is cubed, you can place it in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer overnight. I did 2-inch cubes because I know my blender can power through that. I’ve got a Ninja, and it’s got a pretty great two-level blade to make make sure everything gets evenly blended.

If you are concerned about your blender not being powerful enough, I’d cube your melon smaller, and then lay it out on a sheet tray in a single layer to make sure your melon pieces freeze individually. Just throwing my chunks in the bag worked for me, but I did have to smash the bag a little to get the pieces apart.

Blend it Up!

In the pitcher of your blender, you’ll dump in 4 cups of frozen watermelon and 2 cups of lemonade. Then cover it and let it go until it’s smooth. The color will get really light from the ice crystals and air being dispersed. You want to blend it long enough that any potential graininess smooths out. This is out you get that perfect, soft, sorbet texture.

If You Want to Be Extra Fancy…

And if, instead of a slushie, you’d like it as sorbet, spread this mixture into a bread pan and freeze it. You’ll be able to scoop it out with an ice cream scoop for an equally refreshing summer treat. From this point, you could even put a scoop in a margarita glass and pour a bit of sparkling wine over top for a ladies’ brunch.

But for me and my kid, we went alcohol-free and just poured our sweet, smooth, frozen, watermelon lemonade slushies into cups with our favorite silicone straws. We sat out on the front stoop and enjoyed our drinks and some fresh air.

A quick word on the straws, since you might be wondering. I got a set that includes smoothie-sized straws, skinny straws, and a couple stainless steel ones, too. It also comes with cleaning brushes and a carrying pouch. I’ve never had trouble cleaning them, and they have survived my toddler chewing on them.

Getting Better Food Photography

Of course, I’m a blogger, so I had to make my drink look all pretty and get some pictures. The Cub kindly sat by babbling art direction at me and messing with my cloth napkin to make it look the way she wanted.

You know, sometimes I want to do more with my photography. I love those food bloggers who create a whole set for their treats, and I love the images of overflowing glasses and bowls. The mess makes it lovely! You might feel the same way about getting better pictures of your food.

The greatest resource I have found comes from Pinch of Yum. They have this great course on getting better food photography, and even if I haven’t implemented every bit of their advice, the course has helped me with photo editing and getting better angles. I’d highly recommend it. I know that sounds really sales-y but it’s true. It’s just a really good resource.

So, that’s it, really. This is a really easy recipe, and I know you want to get your drink in the blender so you can hit the pool. Don’t forget to take some pictures and tag me on Instagram!
