Dark chocolate hummus is not a new treat, and I’m sad to say this is not my own invention. Whoever thought this up, though, was a freaking genius, though. It tastes just like brownie batter, except that all the ingredients are plant based and natural.
I’ve got a couple great reasons you need to try it, but let’s start with why I wanted to share this great recipe with you. It started about a year ago in a WW meeting. One of the ladies was talking about this fabulous new dessert that she’d eaten every single night and lost weight doing so.
Honestly, I want to say that I’m confident in my size, shape, and weight. You know, I want to spread that body positivity through example. But, for me, news of a decadent dessert that you can enjoy every night and still lose weight piqued my interest.
What Was Her Magical Dessert, Though?
I know, get to the good part, girl! You want to know what this magic dessert was, right? It’s so easy. All you have to do is spoon berries into bowl, to start. It doesn’t matter the quantity, and it doesn’t matter which berries you use. I like a combo of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries.
Then you dollop 2 tablespoons of chocolate hummus on top. The portion size is irrelevant if you’re not watching points or if you have extra macros or calories or whatever you’re counting. For most dips, 2 tablespoons is a serving size.
To cap it all off, you squirt canned whipped cream on top. 2 Tablespoons is adequate, but feel free to use as much as you want. There’s officially delicious non-dairy whipped topping out there, too, if you’re rocking the vegan lifestyle.
So, that’s kind of a bonus reason you need dark chocolate hummus in your life, but as promised, here are the 3 big reasons you are going to want to whip some of this up this weekend.
#1: You Need Dark Chocolate Hummus on a Dessert Board
Have you heard of dessert boards, yet? Personally, I am a big fan of a nice cheese board. They’re lovely and a fun way to present a lot of cheese options at a party. I’ll hang by that board all night until I’ve tried everything on it. Tell me I’m not alone in this.
So, when I first started seeing these luxurious boards just for dessert with spreads of fruits, berries, dips, cookies, nuts, and other colorful and decadent treats, I really wanted one. They look 10000% more fabulous than a cheese board. That’s really saying something, coming from me.
Here’s the thing, though. I don’t have an excuse for a party any time soon. What I do have is a sweet husband and a fairly adventurous little eating toddler. So, the first thing I did with my chocolate hummus was build up a mini snack board for us.
My board had apple slices, baby carrots, pecans, and graham crackers. This is what we had on hand. However, my dream dessert board would also feature honey pretzel twists, cream cheese frosting, strawberries, and garnishes of mint leaves.
What would you put on your dream dessert board to pair with your dark chocolate hummus? Tell me in the comments!
#2: It’s A Perfect Layer in Your Parfait
Along the same lines as the delicious dessert the lady from my WW group had told us about, I was really interested in non-dip options for my hummus. So let me tell you about this parfait option.
To start, pick your favorite Greek yogurt. For me, I like Triple Zero Oikos in Vanilla, Mixed Berry, Dark Cherry, or Strawberry. You might prefer plain, but whenever you’re feeling adventurous, go try a fruit flavor!
In a shot glass, layer the yogurt and hummus alternately and top with berries, for a small snack. For a more substantial meal, like breakfast, include layers of granola and more berries.
This would be a fabulous dessert for a party, too. Little shot glass desserts are a lot of fun, anyways, but your guests will love that they are healthy, too.
What would you layer in your chocolate hummus parfait? Comment to share your ideas!
#3: Dark Chocolate Hummus will Transform Your Toast
Okay, this is really simple and probably obvious, but just hear me out. Spread some dark chocolate hummus on your favorite toast. Heck, toast a slice of sweet potato and spread some on there. Whatever kind of toast you’re going with, this is going to be good.
Of course you could eat your chocolatey toast just like this, but I have some other additions for a truly decadent meal. Try adding slices of banana and drizzling some natural peanut butter over that.
You could also try spreading it on a slice of banana bread. Top with strawberries, drizzle with honey, and sprinkle with chia or hemp seeds.
This is another great brunch party idea, actually. Let your guests choose their toast and toppings. Offer them your fabulous, homemade dark chocolate hummus, avocado, and maybe additional spreads.
With a selection of toppings to play with, some carafes of good coffee, and comfy jammies, this would be a great morning with friends.
Let me know if you have any other toasty ideas for your hummus. I can’t wait to hear what you choose to do in the comments.
So, Let’s Talk About the Recipe!
It’s fine and good to talk about my three favorite ways to use chocolate hummus, but this is a recipe! Let’s get into the details of how this delicious spread comes together. It’s really quick, and super easy. All you need is a food processor. Something small works best so you know the blades will make contact and blend up the beans.
Prep the Beans
To start, you’re going to prep your garbanzo beans, or chickpeas. They’re the same thing; they just go by two names. I used one can of beans and drained off the liquid.
You can, of course, keep the liquid in the fridge until you want to make a vegan meringue. The liquid is called aquafaba, and when it’s whipped, it forms stiff peaks.
Then, you’ll dry them in a dish towel, gently, before peeling them. This is really easy. Hold the bean between your thumb and forefinger with the tip pointing into your hand. Pinch. The skin will come right off.
Into the Food Processor…
That was the hardest part. Now, you’ll just put everything into the bowl of your food processor, and pulse until it’s smooth. You may find that it’s quite thick. To achieve a smoother, thinner texture, you can add more water. Go one tablespoon at a time until it looks how you want it to.
And that is it.
Serve your hummus up as a dip, in a parfait, on toast… or experiment with building yourself a fun new dessert like my WW friend did. I want to know what you use your Dark Chocolate Hummus for!

Dark Chocolate Hummus
Equipment
- Food Processor
Ingredients
- 1 can garbanzo beans drained, rinsed, peeled
- ¼ cup water
- 2 Tbsp avocado oil
- 2 Tbsp maple syrup
- 1½ Tbsp dark cocoa powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp sea salt
Instructions
- If you haven't already, drain your can of garbanzo beans. Rinse until no longer bubbly. Then peel them. (You can save the canned bean liquid, aquafaba, as an egg white substitute; you can also compost the bean skins).
- Place the chickpeas in your food processor with the water, avocado oil, maple syrup, dark cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and sea salt. Pulse until smooth. To thin the mixture further, add 1 Tbsp water at a time until you've reached your preferred texture.
